Transformers: Bumblebee #2 preview

The good folks at IDW have kindly provided me with this preview of Transformers: Bumblebee #2. I don't think anyone else has this yet so I guess that makes this article an exclusive! Awesome! But anyway, here's the pages:

TRANSFORMERS: BUMBLEBEE #2

Written by ZANDER CANNON
Art by CHEE YANG ONG

Colors by MOOSE BAUMANN
Covers by Chee, GUIDO GUIDI

“Things Fall Apart,” Part 2: BUMBLEBEE’s human-allied Skywatch team tracks down their latest target: the AUTOBOT BLURR. With this forced betrayal, the team’s morale takes a deep plunge until BUMBLEBEE and WHEELJACK devise a dangerous mission to free them all from the kill-switches that compel them to obey Col. Horiuchi’s commands.

32 pages, USD$3.99.

I must say that the sheer amount of freedom that IDW is giving the artist on Transformers is getting really confusing. Redesigns, yes. Don is doing an awesome job, but frankly almost every artist (and writer) is doing things their way 100% which makes for somewhat inconsistent personalities and plotlines. The body designs for the bots have no consistency which is very annoying. I understand that IDW's giving their employees freedom and I think it's a great idea! But this is too much of a good thing. It's kinda like free beer; great if you use it wisely, but very easy to overindulge and make a mess. But anyway, this is intriguing and I'm definitely getting the comic now. It's out on January 20.

  1. I prefer this art style over that crap they call the "ongoing" comic. I like my classic TFs to like more G1 rather than current Movie-like.

  2. This plotline is pure drivel. To have the impressive story arc that was 'All Hail Megatron' and to follow it up with the ongoing comic's garbage and this nonsense... is pure disappointment.

  3. Rubbish. Reads like it's written by a high school girl for 8 year olds.

And the art is just plain ugly.

  4. Good points all of you. I can't judge on the whole comic but from what I've seen Cannon do I think he's a Terminator fan (refers to the TFs as "the machines" a lot) who's being given way too much freedom.

And you're right, anonymous #2. The overall conduct of IDW is good but they're slipping up royal now.

  6. IDW is starting to suck hardcore. They've done nothing but screw TFs up from the get go. G1 designs, pure and simple, if it isn't broken don't fix it. They need to stop screwing witht he designs in every book. Good god this is annoying. Don's art has gone from awesome to SUCKTASTIC with this new crap they let him do and these stories are pathetic drivel written by monkeys. Bumbles as leader is a joke and insulting. Optimus would never quit, this is just garbage.

  7. Disappointing, this complete avoidance of responsibility for the visual continuity, but at least it's better than All Hail Megatron.

  8. I might just be mellowing with age, but I'm tired of every TF relaunch being so darned depressing. Every time they start over, the Transformers are being controlled or manipulated by somebody, the good vs. evil dichotomy gets deconstructed, and characters just turn plain mean.
I really feel like the writers are trying to hard to be provocative and relevant.
Some of Bob Budiansky's stories might have been 80s camp, but they had heart...a lot of the fans in the Mosaic project are writing more satisfying narratives.

  9. Crap.

But then virtually everything in IDW not written by Simon Furman or Nick Roche has been.

  10. This series is to IDW what "Micromasters" was to DW.

  11. The style of before "Ongoing" serie are too good.
I'm sad because Don try a "bayformer" style.

  12. Woo 11 comments. I haven't read Micromasters but from everything I've heard about it it sure must suck.
